Ultimate Guide to Design a Small Kitchen

Small kitchens can be a design challenge, but with smart planning, you can create a functional and stylish space.
Don't let limited square metres cramp your culinary style! Here's your ultimate guide to maximising every inch:
1. Tall Cupboard is a Must
In a small kitchen, vertical storage is your best friend.
A tall cupboard, or pantry, utilises the full height of your wall, providing ample space for dry goods, appliances, and more.
This eliminates clutter and keeps your countertops clear. Consider pull-out shelves for easy access to items at the back.
Also, consider a broom closet for storing tall items like brooms and vacuums.
2. Island? / No Island?
The million-dollar question for small kitchens.
An island can be a fantastic addition, offering extra prep space and storage. However, if your kitchen is truly tiny, it might create a bottleneck.
Adequate food preparation space is essential. Allow a minimum of 600mm (preferably 1 meter) of countertop space between the cooktop and the sink if they are on the same countertop.
An island provides a great social space for meals with family and friends. If a fixed island isn't spatially feasible, a mobile island or a bar table is recommended.

3. Fridge (Integrated if There's Budget)
Choosing the right fridge is crucial.
Allow 700mm - 750mm deep bench and cabinets around the fridge so it will sit flush with your cabinet, creating a streamlined look.
If your budget allows, an integrated fridge blends seamlessly into your cabinetry, making the kitchen appear larger.
4. Appliance, Appliance, Appliance
Think carefully about the appliances you truly need. In a small kitchen, multi-functional appliances are your best bet.
Consider a combination microwave/oven or a slimline dishwasher. A 450mm wide integrated dishwasher can fit more dishes than you think.
An under-bench oven is a space-saving essential. Wall ovens are great for larger kitchens; however, they consume valuable bench space.
Allocate a free bench space for small appliances such as kettle, toaster, coffee machine. They usually take up more space than you think.
When I design a kitchen, I usually include a “appliance cupboard” with a bench to fit all the appliances.
Additionally, make sure you plan for where you need the powerpoint.

5. Don't Forget the Bins
Proper waste management is essential, even in a small kitchen.
Cupboard space under the sink is usually a good place to fit a couple put-out bins.

7. A Good Size Sink
Don't sacrifice functionality for size. A single, deep sink is often more practical than a double sink in a small space.
Consider a sink with a built-in drainboard or a roll-up drying rack to maximise countertop space.
8. Drawers vs. Cupboards
Drawers offer superior accessibility, especially for pots, pans, and other frequently used items.
They prevent items from getting lost at the back of cupboards.
If your budget allows, prioritise drawers over traditional cupboards.
9. Overhead Cupboards?
Yes, but with careful consideration. Overhead cupboards provide valuable storage, but they can make a small kitchen feel cramped.
The reality is, it depends on your height. As someone who is 1.6 meters tall, overhead cupboards are quite inaccessible for me.
Floating shelves make the kitchen appear more spacious and provide a good display for your favorite ceramics, glassware, and cookbooks.

10. Good Task Light Plus a Feature Light
Proper lighting is essential in a small kitchen. Under-cabinet/ shelf lighting provides crucial task lighting for food preparation.
A pendant light or a statement fixture can add a focal point and create ambiance.
11. Style Note: Keep it Simple
In a small kitchen, simplicity is key.
Choose a light, neutral colour palette to make the space feel larger.
Avoid overly ornate details and stick to clean lines.

Declutter regularly. A clean and organised space will always feel bigger.
By implementing these tips, you can transform your small kitchen into a functional and stylish space that you'll love to cook in.
